Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Justice John Paul Stevens are both in the news today: Byrd, the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, died early this morning, and Stevens has appeared for the last time as a member of the Supreme Court.
This isn’t the first time the two men’s lives intersected on the national stage.
On Dec. 9, 1975, Byrd, as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was among those who questioned Stevens during the then-nominee’s confirmation hearing. Many of his questions are reminiscent of those that senators are likely to ask Elena Kagan this week, in her confirmation hearing to succeed Stevens on the Court.
