Former NBA player, college star Turpin dead

Former Kentucky basketball star Melvin Turpin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a coroner’s report.

The report Friday gave no other information about the investigation, including whether Turpin left a suicide note.

Police and the coroner were called to his North Lexington, Ky., house Thursday afternoon on a personal injury call.

Margaret Burrus, his sister, tearfully told reporters outside her home that her brother was diabetic and trying to keep it under control.

Fearsome Felipe Melo prefers flowers to red cards

If he received as many flowers as he does red and yellow cards, Brazil’s Felipe Melo would be a very happy man.

The defensive midfielder has a fearsome reputation for his crunching tackles, admitting that he often goes over the top, but on Saturday revealed a soft centre which few would have suspected.

“I’m an old romantic,” he said to much bewilderment from the hundreds of Brazilian reporters at the team’s daily news conference.

“People may think I have a nasty face, but I like to send cards and flowers to my wife, and I like to receive them as well, it’s great … in fact, I get upset if I don’t get them.

“We’ve been married six years but it still feels like we’ve just started going out,” he added.

In football terms, there is nothing romantic about a player who has picked up five red cards in the last two seasons — one with Brazil and two with each of Juventus and Fiorentina — and is habitually booked.

But the 27-year-old made no apologies for his style of play and said that he regarded fouling opponents as an occupational hazard rather than unsporting behaviour.

Pride Of Chucky is Dana’s dilemma

Chuck Liddell’s return to MMA competition against Rich Franklin at UFC 115 should have been a foregone conclusion. Liddell is one of the UFC’s biggest drawing cards, and he has made no secret of his desire to continue fighting.

Yet it was not a decision that came easily for UFC president Dana White. The struggle with what to do with aging legends like Liddell will present an increasingly difficult dilemma for the UFC in the coming years.

After Liddell’s loss to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 97, his fourth loss in five fights (three via knockout), White was emphatic that Liddell would not fight again in the UFC.

“He’s a huge superstar, and we could still sell a lot of tickets [with him],” White remarked at the postfight news conference. “But I don’t care about that. I care about him. I care about his health, and it’s over, man. It’s over.”

White spoke in absolute terms on that evening, and there’s no reason to doubt his sincerity, but Liddell’s retirement was short-lived. In fact, Liddell will end up taking less time off than a prime Quinton “Rampage” Jackson did between his fight against Keith Jardine at UFC 96 and his grudge-match return against Rashad Evans at UFC 114.

Coker: Arlovski-Rogers Rematch a Possibility

Though Andrei Arlovski’s return engagement to Strikeforce on Saturday didn’t bring him a victory, the 31-year-old Belarusian fighter won’t have to worry about where his next fight will come from.

Arlovski failed to make a dent in Brazilian behemoth Antonio Silva and lost a unanimous decision at Strikeforce “Heavy Artillery” at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., notching his third straight loss in 16 months.

Still, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker made it abundantly clear that the Chicago-based fighter has a home with the promotion. Arlovski has three fights remaining on a four-fight contract he signed with the San Jose-based promotion earlier this year.

Brandon Manumaleuna

The Bears have agreed to terms with tight end Brandon Manumaleuna, and that may just be the start. As Pat Yasinskas blogs, the Bears don’t want to let Peppers conclude his official visit to the Windy City without putting his name to a contract. Frankly, there’s not much argument about Peppers as the prize of this year’s free-agent class — out of the first 3,884 people to submit their free-agent rankings, 2,923 put Peppers on top of their list. And for a Bears team without much in the way of draft picks this year, that would be the next best thing to cloning Mike Singletary and Richard Dent.
